Little Wheel, Das Kleine Rad; Roulette

I’ve been asked to write about roulette. I can’t claim to be an expert, but then I don’t claim to be an expert at poker either. I’m just someone who has played poker as a hobby for a number of years and earned small but regular amounts over those years.

My family and I recently spent a short time in Las Vegas and stayed in a casino. Having family, including a teenager, and me not being overly inclined toward live poker we only wandered briefly through the gambling areas of our “home” for those days. Blackjack always seems pretty passive; the players just sit and play mechanically. At least they’re looking at a real person, as opposed to the slot players who look just as mechanical but are playing a machine. The craps and the roulette tables are where the interesting action is.

People are moving around to place bets and cheering on their picks. They’re interacting with each other, interacting with the dealer. They seem to be having more fun. Of course this difference may be just the difference between an Apollonian and a Dionysian enjoyment. I’m sure most people wouldn’t understand the enjoyment that I get sitting at my computer click-click-clicking through 400-1,000 hands of poker per hour.

I’ve written about playing a roulette system before, specifically the Martingale system and the theory behind it. That approach does not seem too exciting to execute though. I’m sure one can find a more interesting roulette stratagie that is more entertaining to play, and if you’re looking for a more active and interactive game, maybe roulette is the game for you.
